Over the years, Active 18 prepared numerous digital image shows which were presented at various public meetings. We used these projections to show politicians, City of Toronto staff, fellow citizens and developers what we thought were interesting urban planning solutions in other cities.
Charrettes
SWOT Analysis charrette 2006
This charrette was done very early on in the life of Active18. It may have been the galvanizing event for the community. There were presentations by Ken Greenberg, a walk-about around the triangle by Michel Caron. Out of this charrette we created a document which has been used widely – most specifically at the Ontario Municipal Board hearing.

- Executive Summary
Park Charrette 2008
Organized by Netami Stewart with the Active 18 Steering committee. An added bonus to this charrette was that the event was filmed as part of film about Jane Jacobs, public participation in Urban planning by a filmmaker in Vancouver.
Northwest Triangle Precinct charrette 2009
This charrette was organized by Steve Heuchert and the York University MES students as part of their final thesis. They studied the area North and West of Dufferin including the Price Chopper lot. Here is the Terms of Reference document which we used as a backgrounder for people.
Public Presentations
Active 18 Design Notes:
Organized by Michelle Gay, this presentation became the seed for many other shows we put together. We saw the usefulness of putting our ideas into picture form as “Talking Points” at meetings with developers and City Planning staff.
Community Council Deputation:
We first made a mark at City Council when we made a deputation with a power point presentation. We collected images of smartly designed buildings – addressing similar conditions that existed in WQW area. We thought that we would show the councillors and the developers that there could be inspiring, thoughtful, well-designed buildings – in OTHER places. Our point being – Why Not Here in Toronto?
2-90 Lisgar Design Presentation at a Public meeting with Baywood/Page + Steele Architects
1155 Queen Street West Design consultation

Activity Reports and Updates
To keep all the details present we often produced Activity Reports and updates. These documents were often used as agendas for the Steering Committee meetings, for items of discussion with City Planners, Developers etc.
Election Debate – aka “planning smackdown”
Kelly McCray spearheaded and organized an All Candidates (Ward 18) debate for the past fall election. Held at the Theatre Centre at Dovercourt and Queen. We had an amazing turnout and focused on Planning issues. Moderated by Vass Bednar.
We recorded the event. The MP3 file will be available.
